New departure or continuity? Paradoxically enough, the story of Simon Rattle’s music career seems to incorporate both. Even in his seventh decade, the Briton still embodies that type of young conductor whose passion for music never had to go hand in hand with a claim to absolute power, and who has remained open to new paths and new sounds. One who always consciously seeks to be close to musicians with whom he can build a fundamental relationship of trust, no matter how busy he is. In the 2018/19 season, the Alte Oper will focus on the charismatic conductor in a way that reflects these very qualities.
