Jazz in the Mozart Saal (Mozart Hall)
Jazz is the emigrant among music styles. It has wandered again and again from place to place and has found inspiration in its new surroundings.
Today, the best jazz musicians are refined composers and stage musicians who are influenced in a varierty of ways - and those who push boundaries, who do not improvise according to pre-existing rules, but who invent their own rules and decide for themselves which musical language they want to express themselves in. Improvised music which feeds on a variety of sources and historical role models, has become consistently more complex, yet not necessarily less accessible. Since, in jazz, the old spirit of dance music continues to glimmer, winks at the listeners, smiles endearingly at them and takes them along on its journey. But you can never be sure where it will take you. In the 2017/18 season, the Alte Oper continues its jazz series that was introduced in the previous season and shows four innovative formations that will re-explore the boundaries between improvisation and composition.
