FRATOPIA
Festival of discoveries

26 – 30 SEPT 2023

Key-Visual Fratopia © Alte Oper Frankfurt/Norbert Miguletz

Open house, free admission, full programme: the upcoming edition of the Fratopia festival has some innovations in store. We have radically rethought the basic idea of the festival - an invitation to discover and listen to classical music anew. For five days, the Alte Oper is open to everyone, from the afternoon until late in the evening. A top-class programme of short concerts awaits you in various halls of the house. And with it, the cordial invitation to simply drop by - without a plan and without a ticket, but with an appetite for innovative concert formats and encounters!

FRATOPIA RETHOUGHT! THIS IS HOW IT WORKS:

JUST DROP BY!

Whenever you come to the house on the five festival days from 2.30 p.m. onwards, a wide range of concerts awaits you in the various halls until late at night. You have free access to all dates without a ticket or advance booking.

Right in the middle

Once again, the Fratopia festival creates opportunities to experience music from new perspectives - surprisingly, at close quarters, with the ear refocused on the sound sources.
The Great Hall becomes an open space, the usual rows of seats have disappeared or the seats around various sound islands have been realigned. And in the Mozart Hall, too, the audience literally moves into the middle of the sounds. All concerts here are held under the motto “Mittendrin” (in the middle) and enable a new experience of music in space.

Much to discover

The Fratopia festival offers a wide-ranging programme across the centuries and genres. Look forward to: a Brahms symphony broken down into individual sound sources; contributions to György Ligeti's 100th birthday; unusual alliances, for example between a drum kit and four saxophones; electrobeats and club atmosphere; concerts with classical music stars such as Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Michael Wollny or Alexej Gerassimez and much more.

Meeting place Alte Oper

Open house, that doesn't just mean open concerts. During the festival, the Alte Oper becomes a meeting place as well as a retreat. Make yourself comfortable in the reading lounge or experience an ensemble up close in our VR glasses station, exchange ideas with others over coffee and cake, or set up your temporary workplace in our working space. In short: just drop by and feel at home with us!

TUE 26 SEPT

THE DAY AT ONE GLANCE

TIP OF THE DAY: ALEXEJ GERASSIMEZ & FRIENDS
The opening at 3.30 p.m. in the Great Hall gives the festival its heartbeat: Alexej Gerassimez and his fellow musicians roam the contemporary percussion literature and show in formations ranging from solo to quartet that percussion means not only rhythm but also timbre. Also on the programme: Iannis Xenakis’ suggestive “Rebonds B” for percussion solo, one of the classics of the repertoire.

WED 27 SEPT

THE DAY AT ONE GLANCE

DAILY TIP: OMER KLEIN

“I don't go for it, but if you put intellect, heart and soul into your music and if you are authentic, then something comes out that connects people.” This is what the Israeli-born composer and jazz pianist Omer Klein says, who - a true cosmopolitan - makes “connecting” the main theme of his entire artistic output. He also builds bridges between genres in his Fratopia contribution - and lets the audience get very close to him and the music.

In the first of his Fantasiestücke, Robert Schumann asks the interpreters to play "tenderly and with expression". Cellist Anastasia Kobekina and pianist Diana Sahakyan conjure up poetry in the Open Space with these pieces and music by César Franck.

18:30 – 19:15

Classical music or jazz? Composition or improvisation? Orient or Occident? The Israeli pianist Omer Klein refuses to give a clear answer - and shuttles merrily between the genres.

THU 28 SEPT

THE DAY AT ONE GLANCE

DAILY TIP: ENSEMBLE REFLEKTOR
Founded in 2015, the self-governing ensemble reflektor is one of the youngest representatives in the national orchestral landscape - but has been stirring up the classical music world with unconventional programmes and new approaches to music ever since. The contribution to the Fratopia Festival is also about unusual approaches - with a performance of Johannes Brahms’ uncompromising, groundbreaking Fourth Symphony that is “permeable” in the truest sense of the word. The orchestra - under the direction of Holly Hyun Choe - is distributed in small groups in the Open Space of the Great Hall, creating space for new listening in between!

The pianist and border crosser Kai Schumacher and the Signum Saxohone Quartet take the audience directly to the abysses of the night, into gentle contemplation and wild states of intoxication. Works by Bach, Gershwin, Schubert, Debussy and others will be heard.

SAT 30 SEPT

THE DAY AT ONE GLANCE

DAILY TIP: BACH’S CELLO SUITES WITH ANASTASIA KOBEKINA
Actually, it is not that difficult to name the recipe for magical moments in music, finds Anastasia Kobekina. The simple formula for the cellist, who is currently celebrated everywhere, is: “Open your heart and enjoy the now. We are so overloaded with worries about the past and the coming and enjoy the present far too rarely.” The young musician focuses on the moment - in Bach’s monumental cello suites.

The intermediate levels are more interesting for them than the set spaces for classical music. In the open space of the Great Hall, the musicians of the "Orchestra in the Stairwell" want to create a concert experience that is out of the ordinary - with works by the French composer Maurice Ravel or the New Yorker Judd Greenstein, for example.
