Across all borders
Throughout history and across continents, people have travelled, taking their most precious memories with them in the form of songs and melodies. They travelled as traders on the famous Silk Road, as crusaders or colonisers, or were taken away as slaves or refugees. In their new homelands, these musical traditions encountered indigenous rituals, the sung knowledge of ancient cultures, the flowery poetry of travellers passing through and the rhythms of exuberant festivals. New styles and exquisite harmonies emerged: Afro-Caribbean sounds, Arab-Andalusian music, rembetiko, shashmaqam, and Afro-jazz. These are the inspiration for today's musical bridge builders. In four concerts, ensembles from the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, Central Asia and West Africa celebrate the endless flow of sounds between intangible cultural heritage and the music of tomorrow!
