The shashmaqam is one of the greatest musical treasures of the Transoxania region, located on the historic Silk Road between the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers in present-day Uzbekistan. This classical song cycle reflects the peaceful diversity of the multi-ethnic desert oasis of Bukhara, which was home to Hindus, Jews, Orthodox Russians, Persians, Mongols, and Koreans. During the Soviet era, the shashmaqam was exploited for ideological purposes and its original form was distorted by grand orchestral arrangements. Today, however, it is being revived by a new generation, and it has been on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage List since 2003. Gulzoda Khudoynazarova is considered the future of the shashmaqam genre: with her nuanced voice, she is opening new doors by combining singing with instrumental music, poetry, performance, and spiritual rites. Hailing from Bukhara, the trio presents this classical song form with masterful instrumental accompaniment to the vocals.
