The fourth and final event in the 'Musiken der Welt' series features Harmony's Brass Band. Founded in Porto-Novo, Benin's second largest city, in 2016, the band continues the great tradition of West African brass bands with its own unique sound. The band follows in the finest tradition of African brass bands, which originated in the colonial context of the 18th century, but have since become established in independent, urban Africa. Led by Florentin Koudjou, the band also pays homage to the legendary rail bands of West Africa, who in the 1970s welcomed travellers at railway stations and performed for locals as house bands for railway companies. The band's repertoire is influenced by traditional Beninese music, including its songs and rhythms. However, elements of jazz and New Orleans brass bands also enrich the sound and harmonies of the brass instruments.
