Venezuelan singer and percussionist Rebecca Roger Cruz and her ensemble use voices, strings, and bamboo percussion instruments to present the multifaceted soundscapes of Venezuela. This country is located in northern Latin America and has a long Caribbean coastline. It is bordered to the west by the peaks of the Andes and the Gulf of Maracaibo. Venezuela is characterised by its water-rich plains and lush rainforests, which are fed by the Orinoco River. This river flows into the Atlantic Ocean in a huge delta off the coast of Trinidad and Tobago. The concert draws inspiration from these landscapes, the country's history, and the soul of its people. Imitations of birdsong, incantations of indigenous music, baroque melodies from the Spanish colonial era, and percussive trance sounds testifying to the West African slaves who were deported to the Caribbean form a new connection. The music reflects the cultural melting pot that is Venezuela, where the influences of the Caribbean, Latin America, Africa and Europe converge.
