Granada, home to the Alhambra, is one of the most magical places in world history. From the 13th century onwards, Arab, North African, Iberian and Jewish cultures came together under the rulers of Spain's last Muslim empire, resulting in the birth of Arab-Andalusian music. Following the Reconquista in 1492, expelled Muslims and Sephardic Jews took their songs with them to their new homes in the Levant and Anatolia. In Mediterranean ports, these sounds merged with local traditions to give rise to new styles, shaping the maqam tradition from which rembetiko would later emerge. In concert, the delicate layāli blend with the profoundamanés of Greek rembetiko, forming a musical bridge that transcends borders and centuries.
