His interpretations are often described as 'thoughtful' and 'intellectually profound', 'transparent' and 'free from false pathos'. However, when Philippe Herreweghe conducts, these undoubtedly accurate descriptions are elevated further: the audience experiences music that is interpreted with such precision that it seems completely new. Having come from a background in Baroque music and having long since explored Classical and Romantic music, Herreweghe sweeps aside all conventions, letting his musicians — who play on original instruments — reinterpret even such well-known works as Beethoven's symphonies. It becomes all the more illuminating when he takes action in pieces that one thinks one knows inside out. This is the case with Franz Schubert's last mass, which is considered one of the masterpieces of Schubert's later period and is more dramatic than any of the composer's operas.
