‘My greatest work is a grand mass,’ wrote Ludwig van Beethoven, referring to his Missa Solemnis. Jordi Savall, the Catalan conductor with a background in early music who has just won the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize, has now devoted himself to this groundbreaking mass following his highly acclaimed complete recording of Beethoven's nine symphonies. This is particularly fitting as 2020 is the big Beethoven year – after all, Savall says it is ‘one of the most valuable treasures of the human spirit’. With his ensemble specialising in original sound and his choir trained in Baroque music, Savall achieves the feat of shedding all the solemn, paralysing baggage that has accumulated around this monumental work. Savall achieves a finely tuned, lucid sound. His Beethoven is dramatic and powerful, yet never pompous. His 'greatest work' thus finds genuine inner greatness.
