‘Drawing and painting come much more easily to me than writing songs.’ This year's jazz artist-in-residence at the Alte Oper, Cécile McLorin Salvant is not only an exceptional jazz singer, but also a talented visual artist. Soft shapes and flowing movements are her trademark. It is clear that the American singer finds significant inspiration in the artworks of Henri Matisse. Commissioned by the Alte Oper, the three-time Grammy winner has composed a musical reflection on Matisse's late illustrative work Jazz from the Met Museum's collection, which she will premiere with her trio as part of the festival. Incidentally, this is not her first collaboration with the Met Museum; the New York–based multidisciplinary artist has previously performed two musical evenings based on exhibited works of art at the Met Museum.
