Programme
Two ensembles, two cities, two arts – one concept for a synesthetic art experience. Over two evenings, the Alte Oper will combine images from the Met Museum's collection with music to create a sensory listening and viewing experience. The musical element is provided by a transatlantic alliance of the Ensemble Modern and the New York ensemble The Knights. During performances of pieces related to New York or Frankfurt, audience members can immerse themselves in projections of significant images from the Met Collection. On the first evening, for instance, Jackson Pollock's monumental 'Number 28' will be scanned live and in synchrony on film, capturing every detail. The second evening will focus on a tribute to Gerhard Richter. New York composer Steve Reich was inspired by Richter's work to create a fascinating composition for a large ensemble. Visitors to the Alte Oper will experience the close interweaving of music and visual art when the musicians perform live alongside a projection of the film 'Moving Picture' by Gerhard Richter and Corinna Belz. Another highlight is the Zodiac Suite by the composer Mary Lou Williams. Her jazz music has been rediscovered by the New York ensemble The Knights, who have arranged it for chamber orchestra. On both evenings, Max Hollein will guide visitors through the cosmos of images and sound.
