Andrés Orozco-Estrada is a charismatic Colombian conductor who was music director of the Houston Symphony Orchestra and principal conductor of both the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. He is currently general music director of the city of Cologne. However, he has a very special love for the Filarmónica Joven de Colombia, the best youth orchestra in his country. He associates this orchestra with 'moving concert experiences' full of energy and joy of playing. He emphasises in particular that 'the orchestra dances!', which he means quite literally as well as figuratively. For vivid works such as Stravinsky's 'The Firebird', the young musicians create choreography. The entire orchestra moves to the music, providing a sensual and spirited alternative to the static nature of traditional symphonic performances.
