A street goes to a concert
The community project is entering a new round - with the team Alt-PreungesheimMusic brings people together – which is why the Alte Oper wants to bring together the residents of a street in Frankfurt in a special musical community project. The basic idea is this: music-loving residents of a particular street – in other words, neighbours beyond their own household – are not only invited to the Alte Oper together, but can also benefit from the concert hall’s expertise right in their own homes and organise concerts and other cultural experiences and activities for and with their neighbourhood. After all, music is the perfect way to strengthen bonds with others or to forge new ones in the first place.
The project enters its third round in the 2026/27 season. Following Team Rottweiler Straße, which concluded its project year in June with a grand celebration, the Alt-Preungesheim neighbourhood community has been selected through a competitive process as the partner street for the 2026/27 season. For the next year, it will be supported and guided by the Alte Oper and the Stiftung Polytechnische Gesellschaft in its activities centred on music and social cohesion. The project year will kick off in August 2026 with a performance in the neighbourhood at the Höfefest, and the new street community will finally hold its first joint concert evening on 11 October 2026: The concert, featuring Cécile McLorin Salvant – the Alte Oper’s jazz artist-in-residence for the 2026/27 season – and the Rhineland-Palatinate State Philharmonic Orchestra, will herald a year full of cultural discoveries and shared experiences
Alt-Preungesheim Street – big plans for the 2026/27 season
Alt-Preungesheim Street is situated in the heart of the historic centre of Alt-Preungesheim. Where the Kreuzkirche, the community centre, the cemetery, nurseries, and sports and cultural facilities all come together, people’s paths cross every day. By taking part, local residents hope to bring their street to life with sound. ‘Make it musical!’ is therefore the motto, which the project team intends to bring to life through, amongst other things, an invitation to spontaneous singing (‘Choir for an Evening’), a participatory concert for children and an evening around the campfire with songs. In addition, the team plans to build bridges to other community-building activities: participants can try their hand at pottery, painting or dancing to music, take part in a spooky musical reading, or meet up for a picnic or a courtyard party with musical entertainment.
