New room acoustics for the Mozart Saal

The sound of the future

The Alte Oper Frankfurt is launching one of its most exciting projects to date: the Mozart Saal is being fitted with brand new, highly flexible acoustics that can be tailored to suit each concert and event. State-of-the-art audio technology combined with artificial intelligence will enable the hall to be adapted to different acoustic conditions and requirements.

In collaboration with the renowned acoustics company Müller-BBM, an electronic room acoustics system is currently being developed that has already set new standards in leading international venues. This system, 'Vivace', will enhance the natural properties of the room and open up new sound experiences for artists and audiences alike.

Thanks to the collaboration with Fraunhofer IDMT, the project is truly groundbreaking: AI developed by the research institute will continuously analyse the sound conditions in the hall and automatically respond to changes, such as when the room fills with audience members. This ensures that the sound is always precisely balanced, offering a consistently impressive listening experience.

Extensive acoustic measurements and tests will be carried out until the 2027/28 season. The first contribution to the data collection was made in November 2025 by Kit Armstrong, the project's ambassador, at a private workshop concert attended by an invited test audience. The new acoustic system is scheduled to be inaugurated and put into operation at the beginning of the 2027/28 season in September 2027.

This project has been made possible thanks to the Hertie Foundation, a non-profit organisation that combines innovation and culture, and which is supporting the Alte Oper on its journey into the future.
