Why would an exciting film suddenly lose all its excitement without music? And how can the same scene suddenly seem funny rather than scary when accompanied by different music? In this lecture, we’ll explore how soundtracks amplify our emotions and why music determines whether a scene comes across as funny, sad or scary. Together, we’ll discover how composers create musical motifs for heroines, monsters or villains, and why even dinosaurs in films only seem truly dangerous when accompanied by the right sounds. Through practical experiments, we’ll create our own short soundtracks and experience how the impact of a film scene can be noticeably altered by music alone.
