The audience in the Großer Saal can see the mighty organ with its three manuals, 62 stops and more than 4,700 pipes, built by the Berlin organ builder Karl Schuke, but rarely hear it. This visually striking instrument is now being brought to life with a programme of pure Bach, played by one of the most famous organists of our time: Olivier Latry. In 2022 and 2024, the Frankfurter Bachkonzerte provided him with the Schuke console as a substitute, as Latry is the titular organist of Notre-Dame de Paris and lost his workplace at the Cavaillé-Coll organ for many months due to the devastating 2019 fire. This enabled him to undertake guest performances, such as the one at the Alte Oper in 2024, just a few weeks before Notre Dame's reopening. This performance was widely regarded as a sensational demonstration of the art of organ playing.
