One of the highlights of the Romantik-Museum is the section on Robert Schumann's 'Scenes from Goethe's Faust'. In her lecture, Dr Ulrike Kienzle transports us back to 1853, the year of its completion, when the young Johannes Brahms introduced himself to the Schumanns and was welcomed with open arms as the heir to Romanticism. The shock of Schumann's nervous breakdown the following spring is reflected in Brahms' variations on the 'ghost theme' and his first piano concerto. Pianist Konstantin Zvyagin will provide the musical accompaniment for the afternoon.
Music by Brahms will also be on the program for the evening concert at the Alte Oper, when the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and Yuja Wang perform two of his piano concertos.
