Thanks to its brilliantly formulated, open-hearted sentimentality, but also because of a wonderfully fragrant waltz movement, it is one of the most popular works in Tchaikovsky's catalog: the Fifth Symphony. „Artist in Residence“ Kirill Gerstein counters with emotional force and furious keyboard playing.

„Here is an unabashed showpiece in the grand manner“ said „The New Yorker“ about the premiere of Thomas Adès' Piano Concerto in Boston in 2019, where Kirill Gerstein was also the pianist. „Thundering double octaves, frame-rattling two-hand chords, and keyboard-sweeping glissandos.“ – this work offers everything a full-fledged piano concerto can impress with. It is, added „The New York Times“, „refreshing, even radically normal.“ And it is frequently played on stages around the world, which is a good sign. Adès is reminiscent of Prokofiev and Bartók here, while Ferruccio Busoni gave free rein to his appreciation of Mozart in his „Romanza e Scherzoso“ for piano and orchestra.
