Concert introduction
Beauty that borders on the unreal: This is what connects the Midsummer Night's Dream music and the Brahms songs with Unsuk Chin's cello concerto. The bright Mendelssohnian glow, which seems to know no grounding, is mirrored here in the spherical sounds of the composer from Korea. If musicians stayed in their comfort zone, the sonic result would not touch them, says Unsuk Chin. That is why she always pushes her performers to the limit with what she writes for them. In this highly sensitive work, not only cellist Alisa Weilerstein, who is taken to extreme technical extremes, but also the musicians of the hr-Sinfonieorchester find themselves in their very own, demanding sound universe - which prepares performers and listeners alike perfectly for ‘A Midsummer Night's Dream’, the incidental music by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. For here a literary magical world is captured in sound with a weightless delicacy that no composer has ever achieved before or since. (hr-Sinfonieorchester)
