Concert introduction
His last, great symphony in C major ‘has worked among us as no other after Beethoven's’, wrote Schumann, who revered Schubert's symphonic legacy so much. In Kent Nagano, she meets a conductor who can open our ears to this solitary masterpiece like no other. However, Kent Nagano always places contemporary music in the front row. The music of Henri Dutilleux, who died in 2013 at the age of 97, is particularly close to his heart: he was regarded as the last French classic of modernism and as a composer who appreciated lyricism, poetry and iridescent timbres. And what is particularly true of the cello concerto ‘Tout un monde lointain ...’ is the virtuosity - the cello under the hands of Jan Vogler has to perform almost acrobatic feats here. At the same time, Dutilleux never lost contact with his listeners. He, who can be considered the heir to Maurice Ravel in particular, once said that for every young composer there is ‘the moment when he has to kill his father, so to speak. I may not have done this thoroughly enough. But perhaps it is precisely because my music is more accessible to the public. But I was never interested in being understandable. I'm just looking for my absolute truth.’ (hr-Sinfonieorchester)
