Concert introduction
Korngold said that he wrote his violin concerto ‘more for a Caruso than a Paganini’. Which means: the courage to be melodious. This makes Renaud Capuçon, with his full, velvety violin tone, the ideal interpreter and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 11 an edgy counterpoint. This symphony is like a history lesson. Its title ‘The Year 1905’ refers to ‘St Petersburg's Bloody Sunday’ and the massacre of demonstrating workers in front of the Tsar's palace. It can be heard vividly here: The tension, the confrontation between people and power, the mourning for the dead. Revolutionary chants, workers' anthems, protest songs - this is the material from which Shostakovich creates a powerful and vivid symphony, which can be related to the year of its composition, 1957, with the Hungarian uprising that had just been bloodily suppressed, as well as to the present day. Alain Altinoglu and the hr-Sinfonieorchester continue their recording of all Shostakovich symphonies this season with this work. Alaraph’, this work by focus artist Unsuk Chin, which can be heard in Germany for the first time, is also physical, energetic and features a powerful percussion battery. The title was provided by one of the so-called ‘heartbeat stars’, whose pulsation resembles the heart rate in an electrocardiogram. (hr-Sinfonieorchester)
