Recent decades of avant-garde music have also produced their own 'classics'. One example is Gérard Grisey's polyphonic ensemble piece Partiels, widely regarded as one of the highlights of spectral music. Another 'spectralist' is the French composer Kaija Saariaho. In Io, she achieves a unique fusion of acoustic and electronic sound elements. Born in 1975, Annelies Van Parys considers her 2024 lament 'Threnody' to be a tribute to the Finnish composer, who passed away in 2023. This is a pause in an exciting programme sequence that begins with Eric Wubbels' 'Auditory Scene Analysis, Part I', which is a scientific research journey into auditory perception, and includes 'Green, Yellow and Blue', a spirited late work by the Italian composer Fausto Romitelli, who also died far too young.
