BEHIND THE SCENES

An English-language pre-concert talk for and with international guests, with live jazz by Sebastian Scobel & Friends

‘There are only a few composers who I feel have completely changed the world,’ says Iván Fischer. ‘But when I think about it, Beethoven is always the first person who comes to mind.’ When it comes to Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, the conductor goes even further, believing that whenever freedom or liberation from outdated world orders is mentioned, this masterpiece is the ultimate reference point. In 2027, the music world will commemorate the 200^(th) anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven's death. There is hardly a better ensemble with which to perform his final symphony, with its jubilant choral finale, than the Budapest Festival Orchestra under the direction of Iván Fischer. Fischer does not seek to be a revolutionary himself; he simply wants to communicate Beethoven's message as clearly and undogmatically as possible.
