How was Ludwig van Beethoven able to compose some of his most famous works despite being almost completely deaf? We set out to explore this question on a musical journey of discovery. Through letters, compositional sketches and historical documents, we discover how musicologists research Beethoven’s life and work – from deciphering his handwriting to dating old sources. In doing so, we journey into the soundscape of his time and learn how music was once heard, shared and experienced – long before records, CDs or streaming existed. Through audio comparisons and small compositional exercises, Beethoven comes to life not only as a famous composer, but also as a man of his era.
