The Soundtrack-Workshop
workshop and concert / from 8th gradeThe first films, shot around 130 years ago, had no soundtracks, but instead relied on big gestures and strong facial expressions. A workshop for school classes, linked to the Wim Wenders Festival, takes us back to the early days of silent film.
Students from grade 8 onwards are invited to explore for themselves how images can be combined with sound. Together with professionals from Foley (i.e., the sound effects department), film music, and film design, they take on a silent film from the early history of cinema and develop an independent audio track for it—with sounds, atmosphere, and music. Composing and making music themselves is part of the work process. The result is a soundtrack that lends new moods and atmospheres to the moving images. The aim of the workshop is to present the live soundtrack (including a screening of the film) at the Alte Oper, where the participants will receive support from sound and music professionals.
Speaking of professionals: in the evening, the students will return to the Alte Oper to watch a screening of the film “The Skladanowsky Brothers,” in which Wim Wenders pays tribute to two pioneers of film history. On this evening, composer and musician Laurent Petitgand will accompany the film live with his own musical score.
