No Christmas without a Christmas Oratorio. Many music lovers feel the same way. Jauchzet, frohlocket', 'Ehre sei dir, Gott, gesungen' and 'Ich stehe an deiner Krippen hier' - even then Bach struck a joyful, timeless note. A festive mood, magnificent arias here and quiet reflections on the Christmas mystery there, structured and reinforced by the popular chorale verses.
This year, the Frankfurt Singakademie devotes itself to Cantatas 4, 5 and 6, which deal with the naming of Jesus and the visit of the Three Wise Men to the manger in Bethlehem. Not to be missed, however, is the magnificent opening of the Christmas Oratorio with Cantata 1.
