It’s truly incredible! The Waseda Symphony Orchestra is already 113 years old. None other than Herbert von Karajan was one of the orchestra’s enthusiastic mentors in the 1970s. It is one of the best and most famous youth orchestras in the world. But: none of the approximately 300 members are pursuing a career in the arts. The symphony orchestra of the prestigious Waseda University in Tokyo comprises budding lawyers, doctors, computer scientists, humanities and economics students who perform to the highest standards and with an impressive musical culture. Now that the Waseda Symphony Orchestra is finally returning to Frankfurt after a long hiatus, it brings a powerful, wide-ranging sound to the Great Hall. With Gustav Holst’s composition “The Planets”, the orchestra will take to the stage at the Alte Oper, delivering an exhilarating symphonic experience. And with the symphonic poem “Seven Samurai”, Christian Jost draws on motifs from the Japanese film epic of the same name, musically encapsulating the full power of human action – symbolised by a group of taiko drummers and the large-scale Waseda Symphony Orchestra.
