Tonight is a summit meeting of powerful voices from Northern Europe and Northern Japan. The powerful singer and multi-instrumentalist Torgeir Vassvik has developed his own personal interpretation of ritual joik singing, as has the singer Kari Heimen. Both belong to the Sami people, the only indigenous community in Europe that has survived to this day. Joik combines impressive, strongly rhythmic soundscapes with overtones and undertones, driven by the virtuoso use of large frame drums.
In tonight's concert, the musicians from Norway will meet the singers from Kapiw & Apappo, who are members of the Ainu people. The Ainu are an indigenous community in Japan who have lived on the islands of Hokkaido, Sakhalin, and the Kuril Islands since the 12th/13th century. The ritual character of the throat singing, accompanied by tonkori harp lutes and mukkuri jaw harps, is unmistakable in the performances of the sisters Kapiw & Apappo.
