Tonight is a summit meeting of strong voices from Northern Europe and Northern Japan, expressing faith in the soulfulness of Arctic nature. The powerful-voiced singer and multi-instrumentalist Torgeir Vassvik has developed his visions of ritual Joik singing, just like the singer Kari Heimen. Both belong to the Sami, the only surviving indigenous European people. Joik is at the centre of Sami culture and creates impressive, highly rhythmic soundscapes with overtones and undertones, driven by the virtuoso use of large frame drums.
In tonight's concert, the Sami master musicians from Norway will be joined by the singers of Kapiw & Apappo, who belong to the indigenous Ainu people. The Ainu are considered the indigenous people of Japan, who have lived on the islands of Hokkaido, Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands since the 12th/13th century. For the Ainu, music is as natural as breathing. The ritual character of the throat singing of the sisters Kapiw & Apappo, accompanied by the harp lute Tonkori and the Jew's harp Mukkuri, is unmistakable. The music reflects a rugged landscape full of beauty. From northern soundscapes, these musicians create fascinating melodies of unreal beauty that sound contemporary and modern at the same time.
