‘Aphrica’ already looked quite recognisable - the New World appears as a strange elongated shape: Johannes Schöner's globe from 1515 bears witness to the view of the earth when the new continent had only been “discovered” for a good two decades. The special thing about it: This is the first time the name ‘America’ has ever been used on a globe. So how did Renaissance Europe view the world? This is one of the questions associated with the February edition of Salon Frankfurt. The well-preserved globe from the holdings of the Historisches Museum Frankfurt becomes the starting point for an examination of our view of the world and the question of not only where the pepper grows, but also where and how Europe located itself.
