Miles Davis would have turned 100 on 26 May 2026. To mark this milestone birthday, the hr Big Band is staging a very special tribute to the jazz legend – who, incidentally, performed at the Alte Oper himself in 1990. It pays tribute to the collaborative work of Miles Davis and arranger Gil Evans by performing their works ‘Miles Ahead’, ‘Porgy and Bess’ and ‘Sketches of Spain’ – all created between 1957 and 1960 – in their entirety over the course of a single evening, featuring three distinguished soloists. The three albums are regarded as epoch-making and groundbreaking works that were to shape the musical landscape of orchestral jazz forever. “Miles Ahead” marked the beginning of the successful collaboration between the two musicians and was also an important cornerstone of their later status as musical legends. But with the two subsequent albums, too, the pair explored the possibilities of jazz in a large ensemble and made jazz history.
