With his albums and programmes, such as Mondenkind, Nachtfahrten and Ghosts, pianist Michael Wollny repeatedly opens up extremely atmospheric, cinematic worlds, into which he immerses himself with his listeners. His new solo programme, Winterreise, takes up moods and motifs from Franz Schubert's song cycle of the same name, which revolves around a first-person narrator wandering through loneliness. As always with Michael Wollny, the template is merely the starting point for musical narratives whose twists and turns emerge as he goes along. For Wollny, whose projects often involve collaborating with other musicians, the solo format offers a rare insight into his inner world: a darkly romantic mind and an apparently inexhaustible source of ideas and inspiration.
