It is not difficult to love Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto: the first movement is passionate and wistful, the second is characterised by lyricism and intimacy, and the dance-like exuberance of the finale thrilled audiences and the press even at the time of its premiere – and continues to do so to this day. This work presents a thrilling soundscape full of equal dialogue between the soloist and the orchestra – and is thus tailor-made for the outstanding team player Hilary Hahn. It has now been 35 years since her concert debut. She has long since matured from a child prodigy into one of the most expressive performers of our time. And yet, the three-time Grammy winner continues to approach even a work as familiar to her as Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto with infectious curiosity and a thirst for discovery. Performing on an equal footing with her are the London Philharmonic Orchestra and its principal conductor Vladimir Jurowski, who will also be performing Bruckner’s sonically powerful Seventh Symphony this evening.
