Programme
The London Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by its principal conductor Edward Gardner, has become a fixture of every Pro Arte season. This season, the orchestra takes us on a journey to late Romantic Russia at the dawn of the modern era. In doing so, Rachmaninoff’s First Symphony draws out the full orchestral richness of the London ensemble: powerful, sumptuous, mysterious and festive all at once, the musicians guide their audience through the vastness of Rachmaninoff’s cosmos. With her no less impressive performance, pianist Alice Sara Ott dedicates the first half to Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto. With an almost chamber-music-like instrumentation, this work, with its lyrical elegance and poetic intimacy, occupies a special place among Beethoven’s piano concertos and, with its intense dramatic arcs, dynamic contrasts and emotional highs and lows, represents a wonderful sonic enrichment of the programme on this evening.
