The word 'iconic' did not exist in Beethoven's time, yet he succeeded in creating the most iconic symphony opening of all time. Even those who want to steer well clear of classical music cannot ignore the striking four-note motif of Beethoven's 'Fifth'. This symphony delivers on the promise of its opening. At less than half an hour long, it is still hard to hold your breath for that long – the music is so energetic and powerful that it is difficult to catch your breath. It was called the 'Fate Symphony' because Beethoven supposedly said that fate was knocking at the door. Really? It doesn't matter. What he definitely said relates to the power of the three trombones, which were used for the first time in a symphony here. He said, ‘The symphony is with three trombones and a flautino – not three timpani, but it will make more noise than six timpani, and better noise at that.’ You can't get better than that; he was absolutely right.
