Radiant high notes, metallic power, the most delicate pianissimo: musically, Jonas Kaufmann can do it all. No wonder the Munich-born singer has been counted among the world’s finest tenors for a good two decades. This season, he can be heard at Pro Arte in a programme devoted entirely to Verdi. Whether it is the sombre drama of an Otello, the carefree cruelty of a Duke of Mantua (whom Verdi gifted with the catchy tune “La donna è mobile”, a global classical hit), or the tragic love of a Radamès or Don Carlo – Jonas Kaufmann imbues every Verdi role with captivating vocal brilliance and gripping dramatic depth. The secret of his success? On stage, Kaufmann offers more than ‘just’ beautiful singing (though that, of course, is part of it!): he embodies the roles in all their facets, lending them depth, authenticity and humanity. His evening at the Alte Oper Frankfurt is definitely one of the highlights of this year’s Pro Arte season.
