In which areas do rules apply, and in which areas does freedom reign? Who takes the lead, or the melody, and how do the others respond? The principles of jazz can be applied surprisingly well to social structures. This is precisely why the JAZZ IN CONCERT school concert for secondary school students is linked not only to music lessons, but also to political education subjects.
‘Jazz and democracy’ is the motto of the concert, which the Alte Oper offers to Years 7–10 of all school types. Attendance at the concert is independent of whether music lessons are currently on the timetable in the participating classes. Topics such as group behaviour and the importance of hierarchies versus freedom can be discussed in social studies, political science or history lessons to prepare for the concert. The focus is on communication and interaction, and on what groups and a democratic society can learn from the rules of jazz. This interdisciplinary approach is also conveyed in an optional training course for teachers to help them prepare their classes for the concert.
