His mastery is astonishing, his technique beyond reproach, the clarity of his style moving: Jan Lisiecki is undoubtedly an exceptional pianist who, in his early 30s, has already spent half his life on concert stages around the world. His talent and courage link him to Sergei Prokofiev, who likewise revolutionised the concert scene of his time in his early 20s. His second piano concerto, powerful and absurdly virtuosic, is thus something of a showpiece for Jan Lisiecki. He is supported by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and its principal conductor, Vasily Petrenko, as close collaborators. With Rachmaninoff’s Second Symphony, the leading English orchestra contributes another richly textured repertoire classic, which, with its late Romantic character, combines melancholic wistfulness, yearning lyricism and passionate outbursts, and is regarded as one of the Russian composer’s most personal and emotionally rich orchestral works.
