“Pure life” is what Beethoven’s music means to star pianist Igor Levit. And he should know – after all, Beethoven is, in a sense, the central theme of his musical life. Particularly in the Beethoven Year 2027, and consequently in his Pro Arte programme, everything revolves around the Bonn-born master. When he first heard Beethoven, Igor Levit was still a teenager – and was immediately captivated. The emotional power of the music, its immediacy, the inner struggle: “I felt understood.” The 39-year-old has now recorded all the piano sonatas of the “Titan” and explained them in a highly successful podcast. Levit’s Beethoven is always deeply felt and highly topical: indeed, “pure life”. We can look forward to his two concerts in April, when the star pianist will present four of Beethoven’s most significant piano sonatas at the Alte Oper on both evenings.
