Concert introduction
Susanna Mälkki was long considered a specialist in contemporary music, but she is now focusing more and more on the classics. And what could be more fitting than Mahler's „First“, a work at the intersection of late Romantic grandeur and breathtakingly contemporary radicalism?
But of course, today's music still holds sway over the Finnish conductor. She combines Mahler's vivid and bold First Symphony with a work that speaks of final things, quite literally, of the meaning and significance of human life, of death and silence. Her Trumpet Concerto HUSH proved to be Kaija Saariaho's legacy: Susanna Mälkki conducted the posthumous premiere in 2023, with her compatriot Verneri Pohjola on trumpet then as now. He describes the work as „really atmospheric and moving“, in which he kind of represents the „voice of the composer.“ The intrusion of everyday noises is composed into the music here, as can also be experienced so intensely in the music of Gustav Mahler.
