Concert introduction
A Brahms of today must sound fresh, agile, ‘without a beard’ - this is the ideal of Alain Altinoglu, who continues his Brahms cycle with the 3rd Symphony. And he skilfully integrates this sunny symphony into a programme of Brahms-Haydn relationships with a performance by the award-winning hr solo trumpeter. The ‘Third’ is an unusually bright, even sunny work; Clara Schumann spoke of a symphonic forest idyll. The chief conductor of the hr-Sinfonieorchester says that an orchestra must treat it all the more delicately: ‘Transparency is more important than opulence,’ is how he sums it up. Brahms with classical virtues. And Brahms himself was also very classically orientated when he composed his ‘Variations on a Theme by Haydn’, although the source material was probably not by Haydn after all. Guaranteed Haydn, on the other hand: his trumpet concerto, one of his most popular works, with Sebastian Berner as the soloist. The solo trumpeter of the hr-Sinfonieorchester won first prize at the International Maurice André Competition in Paris in 2022 - with the Haydn Trumpet Concerto as the final piece.
