Well-known and unknown treasures of orchestral literature
Daniel Hope is not only one of the most outstanding violinists of our time, but is also committed to his role as artistic director, bridge builder between musical traditions and ambassador of cultural exchange. In short, this artist has become an integral part of the classical music world, and we are always delighted to welcome the charismatic violin virtuoso to Frankfurt. With Elgar's Violin Concerto, he brings a work that is unjustly rarely performed to the stage of the Alte Oper this evening. As one of the English composer's most personal and expressive compositions, it demands the highest virtuosity, subtle phrasing and the ability to powerfully shape emotional arcs of tension from the soloist. With his expressive violin playing, it is tailor-made for Daniel Hope. He will be accompanied in this concert by the Gstaad Festival Orchestra, which has a more familiar work in store for the second half: when the orchestra, conducted by Jaap van Zweden, strikes up the fateful opening bars of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, the hall is instantly filled with tension and lively energy.
