The Goldmund Quartet and its chamber music partner Raphaela Gromes present a Schubertiade of a special kind: two chamber music masterpieces juxtaposed in a single concert! Soaring drama and celestial length - these are the two poles between which the D minor String Quartet and the String Quintet by Franz Schubert move. The quartet's opening movement sets the tone for the whole work with a wild, triumphant gesture that is repeated in the slow movement, the variations on Schubert's song 'Tod und die Jungfrau'.
The Quintet is very different: it begins with a sonic surface from which 'heavenly themes' gradually crystallise. An enchanting beauty of sound that takes us first to paradise and then, in the slow movement, to the brink of the abyss. Everyone who cares about music, even chamber music, will bow down in happy admiration - or rave about it... No one can fully unravel the tonal mystery of this work with words. (Joachim Kaiser)
