Cemetery bells. Sonorous. Gloomy. Suddenly, cold white light. Heinz Becker comes home from the funeral and into the kitchen. In his black suit, five calla lilies in his hand: ‘I forgot to throw them into the grave.’ Instead, they now lie on the kitchen table. What can you do?
‘Want another beer?’ An obligatory, endearing question – in his former life. From now on, he has to decide for himself. Familiar routine? Gone. Nothing is the way it used to be. His everyday life – collapsed. Added to that is this grief. Sorrowful thoughtfulness. This awkward helplessness. And slowly he begins to ponder, to reflect, to process ...
For over 30 years, Gerd Dudenhöffer, with his sensitive, keen ear attuned to middle-class sensibilities, has been playing his real-life satirical, grotesquely authentic fictional character as a personified caricature of the narrow-minded, universal human being like you and me, the average consumer, whom he pointedly exposes with perfect timing, sparingly used facial expressions, devoid of any political correctness, always naturally with hearty, often involuntary, because “Heinz-typical” humour.
DOD – theatrical ‘cabaret noir’, stringently staged, black and white, light and dark, skilfully balancing tragedy and comedy. Tragicomic, in fact. Because Heinz is Heinz. “Dead certain”.
