Cellokonzert e-Moll op. 85

Sinfonie Nr. 1 e-Moll op. 39

Which piece of music do you particularly love? Sol Gabetta has no trouble answering this question: ‘Definitely Elgar's concerto.’ The colours, the lyricism, the melancholy, but also the wit and liveliness: the Argentine-born musician becomes positively effusive when she talks about Edward Elgar's last orchestral work. The British composer wrote it during difficult times as a personal swan song to an eventful life. The cellist has played this magnificent concerto countless times and has also recorded it twice on CD. But she never tires of it. On the contrary: ‘You always find new details.’ And: ‘New ideas open new doors...’ There is no doubt that Sol Gabetta, with her powerful and poetic playing, will never run out of new ideas. For Pro Arte, she opens new doors in her favourite concerto. Joining her on stage at the Alte Oper is the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, which also brings a piece of its musical homeland to Frankfurt with Jean Sibelius's First Symphony.
