Leonardo Fibonacci was a famous mathematician who worked in Pisa around the year 1200 and was the first to introduce the achievements of Arabic arithmetic into European culture. The 'Fibonacci sequence' named after him is a series of numbers that, like the golden section, describes proportions that apply equally to organic growth and harmonious proportions. The visual symbol of the Fibonacci sequence is the shape of a snail, which is ubiquitous in nature - but has also been used in music for centuries in the form of the headjoint of the violin, viola and cello!
The name of the Fibonacci Quartet is therefore a double entendre: harmony and organic growth in string ensemble. Soon after its formation at London's Guildhall School, the Quartet won major prizes, most recently at the prestigious Borciani Competition in Reggio nell'Emilia, where we were able to engage them 'straight from the stage' for a first chamber concert.
