"Peer Gynt". Bühnenmusik op. 23

A musical journey to the far north – that is precisely what this evening promises, with a programme devoted entirely to Grieg and performed by the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. To bring musical greetings from their homeland, the orchestra’s musicians have joined forces with the acclaimed young pianist Alexander Malofeev and the Hardanger fiddle player Ragnhild Hemsing. Just how colourful and diverse the culture of the North is is demonstrated not only by the fantastic mythology of trolls, fairies and gods, but also by the rich musical history, which has time and again been influenced by legends and tales. The story of Peer Gynt – a play by the Norwegian writer Henrik Ibsen – also draws on Norwegian folk and fairy tales. Set to music and immortalised with melodies such as ‘Morning Mood’ and ‘In the Hall of the Mountain King’, it was, as is well known, brought to life by the Nordic master of Romanticism: Edvard Grieg.
