Dream team
That's what you call a well-rehearsed team! Joshua Bell has been Music Director of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields since 2011 and sees himself as primus inter pares. The star violinist is happy to lead the traditional orchestra even when he himself has to play the solo part. When Johannes Brahms' Violin Concerto is on the podium, this is not a matter of course! As a rule, this demanding work requires a conductor alongside the soloist - just like Robert Schumann's Romantic First Symphony. Joshua Bell and his Academy, however, love direct contact: ‘This orchestra knows me so well that they can interpret all my gestures. They know what I mean when I raise my eyebrows or bend my knees,’ says Bell, describing the collaboration. The highly virtuosic Brahms concerto is also regarded as an aural symbol of the indissoluble connection between soloist and orchestra: one of the first violin concertos in music history with a symphonic character.
