In jazz, anything can be improvised on, so why not the well-known Christmas carols? Seeing how a solemn 'O Tannenbaum' can be transformed into a groovy jazz piece is just one of the eye-opening experiences that young audiences can enjoy at the A JAZZY CHRISTMAS concert. The concert is aimed at students in Years 3 and 4 and is linked to mandatory training for teachers.
Not only does saxophonist and presenter Gernot Dechert introduce the children to the world of jazzy harmonies and rhythms, he also takes them on a musical journey around the world. With the world's most famous Christmas animal, 'Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer', they travel from Europe to South America, then on to the Caribbean and finally to New York, a melting pot of cultures. The children experience popular Christmas carols in a new guise, interpreted with all the freedom that jazz allows. They are not only actively involved in the concert, but also learn interesting facts about jazz and world music along the way. For this project, the Alte Oper has teamed up with the 'Jazz and Improvised Music in Schools!' programme once again, which aims to inspire Frankfurt schoolchildren with the magic of jazz.
